The director

Jan Oberg
Director and co-founder
Direktør og medstifter

- "Gandhi argued that the coward should take to violence because nonviolence requires a lot of courage.
I would add that the intellectually lazy fellow chooses violence before even thinking of nonviolent options."

About Jan Oberg's lecture at
The NATO School-SHAPE:

- "Extremely well received, frank, lively, authoritative, outstanding, academic excellence...Dr Oberg was on the right course because his way of thinking touches everybody. The time was too short, because he makes us all think about the world in a different way"...

Welcome to TFF - Updated for August 23-25, 2006

Johan Galtung, TFF Associate, August 23, 2006
What does professionalization in peace research mean?
A path-breaking analysis - with autobiographical inputs - of how to move beyond the dichotomy between government "Realism" and civil society organizations/peace movements "Idealism." Deals also with the code of conduct and accountability of the peace reseacrcher/worker and the parallel with the health worker.

Michel Chossudovsky, TFF Associate, August 21, 2006
Crying wolf: Terror alerts based on fabricated intelligence
The sequence of terror alerts based on phony information, repeated over several years, inevitably creates amidst the British and American public, a sense of disbelief: an uncomfortable feeling that both Scotland Yard and the British Home office are lying. The counter-terrorism apparatus is desperately crying wolf, which could potentially trigger in the United Kingdom, a political crisis of immeasurable consequence.

The Middle East build-up to larger war

Jonathan Power, TFF Associate, August 18, 2006
Time to rethhink the Balfour Declaration
Perhaps it is time if not to re-write the Balfour declaration, at least to re-direct it, back to Europe from whence most Jewish settlers in Israel have come. For do we really want to end up living like the besieged Israelis with an angry Islam world? For surely it is going to get worse, now that George W. Bush and Tony Blair have ratcheted up the degree of confrontation with their counterproductive policies in Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, the Lebanon, and the central problem itself, Israel/Palestine...

Open Letter to Jan Eliasson
President of the UN General Assembly

Uniting for Peace: Strengthen the General Assembly

The board of the Transnational Foundation, TFF sends an Open Letter that aims to stimulate a wider discussion about the preconditions for a genuine peace process also after UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
Invigorate Uniting for Peace. Plan a comprehensive all-inclusive OSCE-like conference under UN leadership. Provide genuinely impartial mediation and conflict-resolution. Implement Security Council resolutions on the Middle East as a Nuclear-Free Zone. Involve civil society, push reconciliation. And give the UN a clear mandate and adequate resources. This - not bombs, extremism and hate - can help peace break out in the region.

Already supported by distinguished civil society leaders, we hereby encourage like-minded individuals and organizations to sign it. See how after the Open Letter.

Farhang Jahanpour, TFF Associate, August 16, 2006
Iran's nuclear threat. Exploring the politics
A thorough background to the present crisis, published by TFF's partner, the Oxford Research Group, ORG. Farhang Jahanpour explores the rhetoric of aggression developing between Iran and the USA and Israel, and asks if war is really inevitable? Published in June but even more relevant now with the Lebanon War as a possible prelude to the bombing of Iran. Remember to return to TFF when you've read it and see
other works by this eminent TFF Associate!

Farhang Jahanpour, August 16, 2006
Nobel Laureate Shirin Ebadi in danger of arrest
Ebadi's human rights center has been declared illegal by the Iranian government. After having written an article on the unfair treatment of women in Iran (
Iran Awakening?), I received an email message from a supporter of the Iranian regime, arguing that at a time when Iran is under serious threat of attack and invasion it is untimely to raise issues about human rights and freedom in Iran. Indeed, the reverse is the case. The persecution of an internationally respected Nobel Prize laureate and human rights lawyer is a clear example of the Iranian regime shooting itself in the foot.

TFF PressInfo 241, August 15, 2006
Assessing the United Nations after the Lebanon War 2006
The UN has become in these situations, sadly, more of a geopolitical instrument than an instrument for the enforcement of international law. This regression betrays the vision that the guided the architects of the UN back in 1945, chief among whom were American diplomats. It is today incapable of protecting any state that is the victim of an aggressive war initiated by the United States or its close allies.
Sad as it is, this assessment should not lead to a cynical dismissal of the Organization. We need the UN - and there are three ways in which we can help it be what it was meant to be. By Richard Falk.

Seymour M. Hersh, The New Yorker, August 13, 2006
Watching Lebanon. Washington's interests in Israel's war
"President Bush and Vice-President Dick Cheney were convinced, current and former intelligence and diplomatic officials told me, that a successful Israeli Air Force bombing campaign against Hezbollah's heavily fortified underground-missile and command-and-control complexes in Lebanon could ease Israel's security concerns and also serve as a prelude to a potential American preëmptive attack to destroy Iran's nuclear installations, some of which are also buried deep underground."
Hersh has done it - again!

The UN Security Council Resolution, August 11-12, 2006
This will hardly bring peace to the region, predicts TFF's Jan Oberg.

Michel Chossudovsky, TFF Associate, August 13, 2006
UN Resolution fails to acknowledge that Israel has launched a war against Lebanon
Transcript of Resolution 1701: the word "war" is not mentioned.
Chossudovsky's analysis is a must-read in a situation where most media - and Western governments - seem to believe that this resolution will lead to peace. Or want us to believe it will. The truth is that the Resoltuion itself is a blatant violation of the UN Charter.

Civil resistance in Lebanon, August 10, 2006
Civilian Resistance: Call For Action & Solidarity For Lebanon
"We, the people of Lebanon, call upon the local and international community to join a campaign of civil resistance to Israel's war against our country and our people. We declare Lebanon an open country for civil resistance."

Robert Fisk, The Independent, August 5, 2006
A terrible thought occurs to me - that there will be another 9/11
Is it to be like this every day? How many civilians can you make homeless before you start a revolution? And what is next? Are the Israelis to bomb the centre of Beirut? The Corniche? Is this why all the foreign warships came and took their citizens away, to make Beirut safe to destroy?

Johan Galtung, TFF Associate, August 4, 2006
The Middle East and the EU as a solution model
There are three building blocks - and not at all unrealistic. There are moderate and legitimate demands and extremist demands; the latter must be substituted on all sides. But most important: there is a model for a sustainable solution: that of the European Community or Union. Thus, we need a new comprehensive approach beyond today's rather naive proposals. The road to security for all goes through peace!

Jonathan Power, TFF Associate, August 3, 2006
Don't at this stage send the UN to Lebanon
It all comes back to Palestine. As long as Israel pushes on with its policy of widening its tenure of the West Bank, no Shiite or Sunni is in the mood to compromise. The stakes have never been higher. A full-scale war in the region is now a distinct possibility.
It would be the height of folly and irresponsibility for the UN to widen its peacekeeping responsibilities in the Lebanon at this stage. Its soldiers would be put at terrifying risk, and for what?

Michel Chossudovsky, TFF Associate, August 1, 2006
The war on Lebanon and the battle for oil
Is there a relationship between the bombing of Lebanon and the inauguration of the world's largest strategic pipeline, which will channel more than a million barrels of oil a day to Western markets? The author thinks so: "Ultimately, this design is intended to weaken Russia's role in Central Asia and cut off China from Central Asian oil resources. It is also intended to isolate Iran. Meanwhile, Israel has emerged as a new powerful player in the global energy market."
Read this fascinatingly different perspective on Israel-Turkey-US energy co-operation and see a series of other articles by this TFF Associate on the connections between energy politics and the present drama.

Richard Falk, July 25, 2006
Lurching toward regional war in the Middle East
Israeli moves toward all out war in Gaza and Lebanon seem linked to wider dangers of a regional war with severe global consequences.
I fear that what we are witnessing is an extremely risky set of moves to shift the joint Israeli/American regional game plan in an overtly military direction. Neither the UN, world public opinion, nor regional opposition seem to have the will or capacity to halt this slide toward regional war.
We can only hope that prudence somehow mysteriously remains a restraining force, at least in Washington. Already there are signs of blowback, with Hizbollah emerging as the political winner, with Iran not far behind, given the degree to which a central cleavage in the Middle East is now shaping up as a contest between Iranian-led Shi'ias and Saudi-led Sunnis.

Richard Falk, TFF Associate, July 25, 2006
Israel's war on Gaza
In a shocking display of disregard for the restraints of international law and morality, Israel has been resorting to a massive, flagrant, and cruel display of collective punishment inflicted on the essentially helpless and captive 1.2 million population of Gaza.
Almost as shocking has been the silence of the world community in the face of these criminal violations of the Geneva Conventions.
The truth about the Middle East is the reverse of what we are being told...

Robert Fisk, SeattlePost-Intelligencer (Washington), July 23, 2006
The empire leaves Beirut to burn

Journal of Globalization for the Common Good
Inaugural issue of a new journal on the macro trends of our time, including the Kenya Declaration 2005 and the Hawaii Statement 2006.

M. K. Gandhi in "Satyagraha in South Africa" - June 30, 2006
Satyagraha turns 80 on September 11, 2006
This is the most important story about September the 11th. On that day the idea of Truth Force, of Love and Nonviolent Action - "peace by peaceful means" in the UN Charter was born. Read Gandhi's own account of the event and how the term came into being.

Troops Home Fast, June 30, 2006
Gandhi as a basis for a fast aimed at bringing the soldiers home from Iraq
On July 3, 2006 starts a fast in front of the White House led by, a.o. Cindy Sheehan and Daniel Elsberg. It's based on Gandhi 's philosophy. It's a truly remarkable moral action as well as one more evidence of the emerging revival of Gandhi and other nonviolent traditions.

Vivek Pinto, June 28, 2006 - The Hindu, India
The religion of humanity
Can religion be a source of positive values in political life, rather than a convenient weapon for mobilising the passions of the mob? "For me, every, the tiniest, activity is governed by what I consider to be my religion." Most of Gandhi's political campaigns were planned at his ashrams in days of solitude, prayer, fasting, self-examination, and rigorous self-control.

The human dimensions of conflict and peace

NEW BOOK - Evelin Lindner, TFF Associate, August 11, 2006
Making Enemies - Humiliation and International Conflict
Pathbreaking book on one of the most fundamental - but sadly overlooked - aspects of all conflicts. See all you need here to order it.

Evelin Lindner, Ralph Summy and Bertram Wyatt-Brown, June 26, 2006
Humiliation and History in Global Perspective - Special issue of "Social Alternatives," Vol. 25, No. 1, First Quarter, 2006
Progress can be made in preventing, managing or resolving so-called intractable conflicts if the roots of the problem are unearthed. While the global history of humiliation that unfolds in the following pages makes for depressing reading in one sense, in another it provides the framework for understanding how to transform such events into peaceful outcomes.

Evelin Lindner, TFF Associate, June 22, 2006
How becoming a global citizen can have a healing effect
The question of "home" is profoundly relevant for the inhabitants of planet Earth. It is relevant for the identity of each citizen and for the solution of conflicts around the world. Do we wish to build a world of domination/submission, where a few have luxurious homes and the rest has virtually nothing? Do we envisage a world of separate nations (with "enemy nations" endangering our homes)? How should local and global aspects of identity be combined? What should we reply, when we are asked, "Where are you from?" A personal reflection on how life can be shaped to fit a larger reality.

The ageing EU Lady's hormonal problems: Human Security for chameleons
An impassioned discussion of the EU (Venus) and US (Mars), the militarization fo the EU disguised as 'human security' and what could be in it - if anything - for Macedonia and other Balkans countries. Since governments can't and won't, we better create human security ourselves, warns the author.

Aleksandar Mitic, TFF Associate, June 26, 2006
End Balkanization now!
About independence for Montenegro and, perhaps, Kosovo. Mitic argues that this can be dangerous for the region as well as stimulate separatism elsewhere. Why is there so little interest in the media... "Can there be any more "taboos" if there are no more principles?" - he asks.

Castro's achievements should be allowed to live on
Washington will make a grievous error if it believes it can bag a quick success by taking advantage of Fidel's illness. Change has to come to Cuba. But the Cubans who live on Cuban soil must be allowed to do it on their own if bloodshed and chaos are to be avoided and the good and useful things that Castro has achieved are not to be destroyed.

Svar: De kristna i väst.

Hva gør Norge i Afghanistan?

Se her hvorfor!
